What is the duration and the volume of the program?

Program duration: 6 years

Program volume: 360 ECTS credits (1 ECTS credit equals to 30 hours)

What is the language of instruction?

The language of the program is English.

What is the goal of the USMD program?

American MD (USMD) program is designed to train internationally competitive and competent, highly qualified physicians (Doctors) who are ready for postgraduate education and the specific training courses, both in Georgia and abroad (particularly in the U.S.). The medical doctors are prepared according to the requirements and standards of the country medical/public health care system.

Therefore, the program must:

• Provide a modern, internationally recognized standards, scientific knowledge and technological advancement of medical education;

• Develop life-long learning skills and self-motivation in forthcoming doctors;

• Ensure that medical personnel preparation and training are conducted via using new informational technologies;

• Ensure that the medical education meets the requirements and standards of the national healthcare system.

What does USMD program provide?

The program provides students with the wide range of opportunities. Custom curriculum allows students pass 2 steps of the United States Licensure Examination (USMLE) before graduation. In addition, students are able to gain research and practical experience in the U.S. during certain stages of their education. The program is proud of basic medical, preclinical and clinical disciplines that are fully integrated. In addition, the beginning of the program is focused on expanding students’ horizons of general education. For this purpose, for the first time, in the area of medical education, the module Mankind’s Creativity is taught to the first year students. The module Mankind’s Creativity combines three courses - History of Civilizations, Fine Art History and World Literature. All these disciplines are integrated into the so-called "Time axis" in mind. Besides, courses such as Cultural Anthropology, Basics of Management, Personal Financing, Basics of Psychology, Foreign Languages (German, Spanish) enrich students’ academic background. Preclinical subjects, such as chemistry, biology and physics are taught in depth with thematic integration.

With the onset of the program starts a new discipline, "Become a doctor," which provides general development of clinical and critical clinical thinking skills using visits in outpatient clinics and hospitals.

In addition, the training process uses the evidence-based medical practices, high-tech laboratories, simulators, the demonstration of the cases with the active participation of the patient and the doctors’ multidisciplinary team.

What does USMD Program Include? / What is the Content of the USMD Program?

Educational program includes: Stages, modules and cycles.

The program has two main stages: Preclinical and clinical.

Preclinical stage (Duration 2 years). The main goal is to give students a fundamental education in the sciences, such as biology, physics, chemistry, give the awareness of the humanities, such as anthropology, fine art history, history of civilizations, world literature, psychology, etc.

Academic calendar changes from year to year. Academic calendar is provided to students in their personal learning portal.

How do I Apply? What is the Application Process for the USMD Program?

Admission procedure includes the following steps:

Applicant must submit hard copies of following documents to Tbilisi State Medical University, Administrative Building, Floor 4, Room 402.

Address: 33 Vazha-Pshavela Avenue, Tbilisi, 0186, Georgia.

Required Documents:

2 copies of applicant’s passport translated into Georgian and notarized in Georgia

2 copies of applicant’s high school diploma translated into Georgian and notarized in Georgia

2 copies of applicant’s high school graduation exam results translated into Georgian and notarized in Georgia (in case of any)

If the applicant is under 18:

2 copies of mother’s or father\s passport translated into Georgian and notarized in Georgia

Note: Birth certificate is required if parent’s name is not mentioned in applicant’s passport

After submitting all required document the university will organize an interview either face-to-face or online via using google meet, skype, BOTIM. The video recording will be uploaded to the University website and will be available to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Georgia.

If the interview is successful the university issues a rector letter stating that university can accept this applicant.

Afterwards, rector’s letter and one copy of submitted documents are taken to Education Quality Enhancement Center for recognition by the applicant or his/her legal representative. The applicant will fill out special form provided by Education Quality Enhancement Center and pay recognition service fee. The payment recite must be also submitted with the other documents.

Education Quality Enhancement Center studies applicant’s documents, verifies them and issues the recognition document. This document states that the applicant is eligible to proceed his/her higher education under Georgian higher education system. This procedures takes approximately 14 business days.

Afterwards, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia issues a decree of enrollment, and grants studying permission to the applicant. It takes approximately 7 business days. The decree is sent to the university. On the basis of the minister order university’s rector issues and internal order and the applicant becomes the student of American MD (USMD) Program of Tbilisi State Medical University

When the university gets decree on enrollment and the recognition document, the university prepares contract for students which is signed by the both parties. According to the contract terms and conditions, student must pay the tuition fee before the end of registration period and send the signed version of the contract back to the university.

As a USMD student, how do I check my academic and financial status?

All students have their personal page on the portal http://sms.tsmu.edu  Students get their usernames and passwords from the program administration. Vis logging in their personal account students have access to all the contents that are vital for the study process. On this website they can also find information about their student status.

What are the Admissions and Eligibility criteria?

Admissions are done according to the order of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia.

For the citizens of Georgia, the following documents are needed:

- Complete secondary school education certificate

- Certificate of passing the National Exams - for the citizens of Georgia;

- Local Georgian applicants must pass 4 exams in Unifying National Exams: Mandatory Exams: Georgian, English, and Biology. 1 Elective Exam (chemistry, or physics, or math).

- A Unifying National Exams in English, received a rating of not less than 80% +1 of maximum number of points - for the citizens of Georgia

- A Unifying National Exams in Georgian, received a rating of not less than 75% +1 of maximum number of points - for the citizens of Georgia

- A Unifying National Exams in Biology, received a rating of not less than 75% +1 of maximum number of points - for the citizens of Georgia

- A Unifying National Exams in Chemistry, received a rating of not less than 75% +1 of maximum number of points - for the citizens of Georgia

- A Unifying National Exams in Physics, received a rating of not less than 75% +1 of maximum number of points - for the citizens of Georgia

- A Unifying National Exams in Math, received a rating of not less than 75% +1 of maximum number of points - for the citizens of Georgia

The Citizens of Georgia, and foreigner applicants who do not have permanent residence in Georgia have right of study at accredited program of Accredited Higher Educational Institutions of Georgia without Passing Unified National Examinations:

- Students who have been living abroad during last two or more years and studying at higher educational institution recognized by the legislation of that (foreign) country and wish to transfer from higher educational institution of foreign country to higher educational institution of Georgia.

- Students who have been living abroad during last 2 or more years and studying.

*According to the rule of The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia, the citizens of Georgia who have started their studied abroad after January, 30, 2017 are obliged to pass exams in general skills organized by National Assessment and Examinations Center. What are the requirements for involvement for USMD program?

Georgian citizen applicants are required to pass the National Exams and must have high score (80%+1) in English Language. Non Georgian Citizens with corresponding documentation, should apply to the EQE. After approval from the Ministry, they have right to start the undergraduate course.

All applicants are obliged to undergo interviews in order to determine the knowledge of the program language. The video recording will be uploaded to the University website and will be available to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Georgia.

How Can I Meet the English Language Requirements?

The TSMU has established English language requirements for applicants who are enrolled in English language programs without national exams:

- All applicants are obliged to pass the English Language Knowledge Test at Tbilisi State Medical University.

-Applicants are exempt from passing the above-mentioned English language test, if the following criteria are met:

A) If there are citizens of the English-speaking country (America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.) where the school / college / university is in English.

B) Certificate of valid IELTS (> 6.5) or TOEFL (> 90) C

When Can I apply? / What is the Application Deadline for USMD Program?

Application period opens in the middle of June and end by the end of September. Study period for the first year starts in September.

How to receive student visa?

Visa procedures can be checked at the official webpage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia: www.mfa.gov.ge  

If the student needs an entry visa she/he must get a student visa prior arriving Georgia. When student arrives to Georgia, the student will apply for Temporary Residence Permit.

 

Will I Need to Get Health Insurance when I Arrive to Georgia?

It is obligatory for the overseas students to obtain local or international Medical Insurance (packages varies from 7-25 US$ per month) before the commencement of each academic year. The student can get travel insurance and when he/she comes to Tbilisi then he/she can get health insurance from local insurance companies.

How much is Annual Tuition Fee?

Annual Tuition Fee: 8,000 GEL for Georgian citizens;

13,500 USD for Non-Georgian citizens.

Can I pay in instalments?

1st year students have to pay the whole amount of the fee till the end of the registration period. Students from 2nd to 6th years are allowed to divide their tuition fee into two parts. Both instalments have to be paid until the end of the registration period.

Please, keep your check after paying tuition fee in case of avoid any misunderstanding.  

What's an average student budget in Georgia?

Like everywhere, living costs in Georgia depend on your personal lifestyle and where you live. Here’s an average monthly budget:

Does USMD program provides dormitory to the students?

We do not provide on-campus accommodation facilities. Therefore, we strongly recommend you to find an apartment for rent in the nearby areas (which are mostly residential).

How Can I Take Student's Certificate (“Tsnoba”)?

There are two types of Student’s Certificate. One is made only in Georgian and it is required for Temporary Residence Permit. The other one is in Georgian and in English which can be used in any means.

You can send an e-mail to usmdprogramstudents@gmail.com asking for student\s certificate. Please specify what kind of certificate you require, only in Georgian or Georgian-English.

In 2-3 working days visit International Affairs Office, 4th Floor and take your Student's certificate (“Tsnoba”).

Where May I Take USMD Student Card?

For the USMD student card visit USMD Program Students Services. Campus Building 5, Floor 4, room 410 only after you receive the email that your student card is ready to take.

What Happens in Case of Losing a Student Card?

If you lose a student card you can get a new one, but in this case, you should pay for that. Fee for getting a new student card is 10 GEL. You need to pay it in the bank and present the recite. With the recite visit USMD Students Services Office (Campus Building 5, Floor 4, Room 410) and they will help you to write a notice for reissuing a new student card. When your new student card is ready you will be informed via e-mail and you can collect it from USMD Students Services Office.

How May I Get Mark Sheet / Transcript of Records?

For getting your mark sheet student must send request via e-mail to USMD Students Services usmdprogramstudents@gmail.com When the mark sheet is ready the student will be informed via e-mail and he/she can collect it from USMD Program Students Service Office (Campus Building 5, Floor 4, Room 410).

How can I make clerkship at Emory University?

Students can make a clerkship at Emory University in case of passing USMD STEP 1 successfully. Only for USMD students, clerkships are free from charge. Though, bear in mind that the program doesn’t cover other expanses.

Does USMD program offers exchange opportunities to its students?

Is USMLE Exam Mandatory?

USMD program helps students easily overcome USMLE Step exams, but of course, passing USMLE Step exams depends on student’s will and it is not mandatory.

 

What about residency program in the United States?

USMD program curriculum gives students sufficient knowledge and prepares them so that they can successfully complete all the procedures required for continuing residency in the United States. In the framework of USMD program will also learn how to prepare required documents for residency program application.

How about research component?
